Welcome to 2016! The holidays are over, and classes are beginning again—there are so many things to consider, especially as you think about your next steps as a predental student. You know that you’re interested in dentistry, but what should you be doing now to make your dreams a reality?

1.     ADEA GoDental is the best resource for prospective dental students.
2.     Excel academically! Grades are important, but you don’t have to have a 4.0 to get into dental school. Try your best and work hard so that dental schools know you will be able to handle their curricula.
3.     Make sure you complete all prerequisite coursework for the dental schools you wish to apply to. You can find information about each school in the ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools.
4.     Take advantage of ADEA and school-specific webinars and open houses. These are great resources for all information related to the profession and how to apply.
5.     Build your dental knowledge and experience.Shadow a dentist, schedule informational interviews and be proactive.
6.     Apply for summer internships and academic enrichment programs. The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program is only one example of the many great summer opportunities available to you.Explore Health Careers is a great place to start searching for other summer opportunities.
7.     Join the predental club at your school. If your campus doesn’t have one, why don’t you create one? Learn how to start your own predental club from an undergraduate that created one on her campus.
8.     If you are applying to dental school this year, do a self-assessment of how prepared you are for the process. The self-assessment will help you be realistic about where you stand and what you need to do to improve your application.
9.     Start asking for letters of recommendation early. Who knows you well enough to write about you positively and in detail about your work ethic and professional potential?
10.  Make an appointment with your health professions advisor—we can help guide you through the process of preparing for and applying to dental school, so hopefully you can reach your goal of becoming a dentist!
